Chronic Physical Problems
Our world is changing fast and what is real and tangible will be at a premium. Health is an area which we need to understand for our self rather than listening to the spin of others. Fortunately taking care of our health is really not that complicated. First and foremost learning about breathing consciously and using the current techniques developed in different natural body work modalities can help us become aware of how we can use breath to maintain our own health. Of course, understanding what is our
body alignment is a primary knowledge for maintaining our natural health.
An e-mail headline I got from the ‘Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Newsletter’ with a sub heading News You Can Use, says;
Millions of people have COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.
In fact, COPD is the fourth-leading cause of death in the United States.
COPD is a lung condition that makes it more and more difficult to breathe.
Both chronic bronchitis and emphysema are considered part of COPD.
In my 45 years of teaching breathing, both chronic bronchitis and emphysema are easily treated by teaching people to breath, even in the severest of cases. Taking charge of our own breathing and using it to restore our alignment, if that is out of order, has been the quick fix for these ailments as well as most conditions that people have as symptoms of minimal breathing. The COPD letter, as you may suspect, goes on to offer a medication for the above problems and nothing in the way of simple breathing techniques that alleviate these disorders.
Another letter came dealing with RLS, restless leg syndrome, yet another ‘disorder’ that comes from the lack of movement people allow their legs to have. It would seem our culture builds in stillness to the body and then treats the symptoms as a disorder that can be handled by taking some form of medication. This can get very expensive for anyone not investigating natural means of working with their own body.
A simple session, that allows our legs to play with motions that our body will produce when allowing our legs to shake and move in unfettered ways, will generally handle the restlessness that lies dormant in peoples legs as a result of holding them still and not allowing them to have some play. Stillness is not a child’s problem but a result of a culture that doesn’t have a very good handle on playing with motion and doing what the body feels like doing. As Marilyn Sewell points out; "The body has its own way of knowing, a knowing that has little to do with logic, and much to do with truth, little to do with control, and much to do with acceptance, little to do with division and analysis, and much to do with union."
Our bodies have an intuitive longing for what is true and useful to our awareness and we need to trust our physical intuition to find natural solutions for the many physical problems that can come to visit us. More and more modalities are being offered that deal with the body in a gentle and natural way and any investigation along these paths are bound to turn up useful methods for us to build upon.
“Your body knows what it likes and it feels good when it's happy. As your body is the source of your vitality, your motivation, your inspiration and enthusiasm and most importantly, your intuition, it's best to get that part of you on-side if you are venturing into a new activity.” ~~~Osho~~~
Get our
book on alignment for a basic understanding of what our physical alignment is all about and do some of the sessions to get a direct experience with your own alignment. Releasing the body with these sessions will demonstrate the maxim; the body releases towards alignment; in other words, your alignment is already there and you can experience results within a period of doing a session. This will also give you a framework for finding what is useful in other modalities of natural body work.
For problems of the body that are characterized as chronic and present pain in the joints, legs, back and neck, breathing and alignment are also a natural approach for understanding how to work off these problems. A quote from my
Testimonial page illustrates how direct a positive result can be:
“I've been a PT, yoga enthusiast, massage therapist, among other things for a number of years. Lately, I have been contending with the reemergence of an old sports injury causing pain to the right hip. After self diagnosing and trying many approaches nothing really seemed to help.
Then I came across your generous writings Curious, I performed your arch lifting standing practice without intending so much to address the hip (I was beginning to just accept it) as to simply experience the technique. What a surprise when I finished. 90 % of the pain immediately resolved.
What a cool technique you have there. It is very sensible, but more importantly, so simple.
Thanks,
Jo”

There is a profound wisdom in the body, in the pulsing of the blood, the rhythm of the breath, the turning of the joints. Once we are aware of its subtle power, the body becomes a sensitive antenna for tuning into nature and other people. It can serve as a metaphor for every human thought, emotion, and action. It is the royal road to the unconscious. It is a small, handy model of the universe. All the books, computers, and electronic networks in the world contain only a miniscule fraction of the information it takes to create one human body.
